I seem to recall they also used the 'abuse of animals ' ( also involving a cat)when demonising Robert Murat. It seems nothing has changed as Mitchell ,was not only according to lying Lizzy, raping her four times a day but he also had the energy to go out and slaughter animals.

Pet mutilations, Smart case linked? Humane society says the question is worth asking
By Pat Reavy

Could last fall's rash of cat mutilations in Salt Lake City's Avenues area be connected to Brian David Mitchell, the man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart? The executive director of the Humane Society of Utah says the question is at least worth exploring.
Gene Baierschmidt said there are a lot of interesting similarities between the two events.
Seven cats and a dog were found mutilated in the Avenues between May and November 2002. Although the possibility of a predatory animal was not completely ruled out, the Humane Society believed it may have been the work of a human, possibly experimenting in occult rituals
.
First of all, Baierschmidt said the timing of the two events is worth looking at.
The remains of pet cats that had been cut open and their organs removed began appearing in the Avenues at the end of May. Smart was kidnapped June 5, and investigators said Mitchell may have been watching her for months.
The last reported Avenues cat mutilation was in November. Mitchell and Wanda Barzee allegedly held Smart captive in their campsite in the foothills above Smarts' house until October.
Baierschmidt also points to a recent Newsweek article that highlighted several disturbing events surrounding Mitchell including the shooting of a pet dog and the eating of a pet rabbit.
"We've been preaching for years there's always the connection between animal abuse and abuse to people," he said.
Finding a connection between Mitchell and the cats is a long shot, Baierschmidt said, but the question is at least worth asking.
"We haven't had any solid leads on the case at all since these crimes have taken place. Not one solid lead," he said. "With all the weird things that happened with the Elizabeth Smart case and the coincidences with the dates and where they took place, there might be some connection there."
Salt Lake City police detective Dwayne Baird said his department was aware of the possible connection and would ask Mitchell about it if they get a chance to interview him again.
A $6,500 reward is still being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Comment: The article is a joke, farcical ,but there is nothing farcical when the 'law' stands by and an innocent man and woman are made to serve a prison term for helping out a young mixed up kid. If lying Lizzy has been brainwashed , it is by her parents who are happy to stand by and watch this crime take place all in their 'good name'

But Baierschmidt said he also realized police and prosecutors were very busy preparing the kidnapping case for court and doubts there will be any time to ask about the possible cat connection.
